Assumption Program of Loans for Education(APLE)
The APLE is a competitive teacher incentive program designed to encourage outstanding students, district interns, and out-of-state teachers to become California teachers in subject areas where a critical teacher shortage has been identified or in designated schools meeting specific criteria established by the Superintendent of Public Instruction. This program seeks to attract outstanding students into the teaching profession. To be considered for APLE, you must:
- Commit to three consecutive years of teaching in a California public school;
- Commit to teach in a subject shortage area, or teach in a school serving a high proportion of low income students designated by the U.S. Department of Education;
- Have completed at least 90 quarter (or 60 semester) units of undergraduate study prior to Fall Term;
- Be enrolled in full-time units each term; and
- Have received, or have been approved to receive a Stafford Loan or Perkins Loan.
If you are an APLE recipient, the California Student Aid Commission will assume a portion of outstanding educational loan balances in return for your service in a California public school (K-12) in either designated subject shortage areas (math, science, English, bilingual education, special education, foreign language), or in schools serving large populations of low income families. Applications for this program are available annually from the Financial Aid Office after March 15th.
