Student Honored by Hispanic Caucus Institute
Cal Poly graduate student Ulises Gonzalez has been chosen to receive the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's Graduate Young Professional Fellowship in Housing Policy.
Luis Valdez, Father of Chicano Theater, to Visit Cal Poly On May 22
A free lecture will be offered at 6:30-8:00 p.m. with book signing at 8:00-10:00 p.m. in Phillips Hall at the Christopher Cohan Performing Arts Center, Building 6—Room 124, on the Cal Poly campus. Luis Valdez is an internationally recognized Playwright, Director, Writer, Actor, Social Activist, Founder of El Teatro Campesino—the Obie Awardwinning theater company that was founded in 1965 during César Chávez’s farm worker struggle. LuisValdez is the Writer andDirector of two of the most significant films inChicano Cinema: Zoot Suit and La Bamba.This event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Tara J. Yosso “Racism, Resilience, and Resistance: Counterstories of Community Cultural Wealth in Chicana/o Education”
An Associate Professor in the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Yosso’s teaching and research apply the frameworks of critical race theory and critical media literacy to examine educational access and equity, emphasizing the community cultural wealth Students of Color bring to school.

The purposes of CLFSA are to:
- Help foster an atmosphere of mutual support, advocacy, understanding, and "familia" betweenand among Chicana Latino faculty, staff, and the wider university community;
- Educate ourselves and the general public on important issues pertaining to the Chicana Latino community;
- Provide a broad network of Chicana Latino role models, support, and advocacy to help ensure the overall success of Chicana and Latino students;
- Be full partners in Cal Poly’s efforts to preserve and foster diversity and the integrity and vitality of the public commitments of our university missionstatement.

Note: The terms Chicana and Latino are used to be all inclusive of both MEN and WOMEN.
